Tech Resources

The following tools and services are available to researchers and their teams in the Pelotonia Research Center and Energy Advancement and Innovation Center.

Managing Data

Researchers in the Pelotonia Research Center and Energy Advancement and Innovation Center have several storage and computational options, working closely with the IT team onsite to determine the best options for their research project. Contact the IT team to discuss the best options for new and existing projects.

Storing Data

There are three default storage options for researchers. These storage locations are allocated by a defined research project and access to the storage can be customized by project. For tenants of the Pelotonia Research Center only, up to 5TB of Scratch Storage is available at no cost to the owner for each defined project, with additional space available for purchase at the standard OTDI storage rate.  Researchers outside of the Pelotonia Research Center can purchase scratch storage. To request data storage for your project, put a request in via ServiceNow and the storage team will set up time to discuss your project needs.

Storage Options

  • Scratch Storage: Temporary storage option with no snapshots or backups. This high-speed storage is available via NFS/SMB/S3 from inside the Ohio State managed client networks and Ohio State datacenter. There is no snapshot protection for this data, nor is it replicated to an external site. This is considered transient data and any data older than 120 days will automatically be removed from the system. (For tenants of the Pelotonia Research Center, up to 5TB of Scratch Storage is available at no cost to the owner for each defined project.)
  • Standard Enterprise Storage: Persistent storage option with frequent snapshots and daily offsite backups, most commonly used option for active research projects. This high-speed storage is available via NFS/SMB/S3 from inside the Ohio State managed client networks and Ohio State datacenter. All data written to this storage is protected by periodic snapshots through the day and a daily replicated copy to an offsite location in accordance with Ohio State Data Protection policies. This is considered persistent data and will not be removed unless deleted by the data owner.
  • Long Term Archive Storage: Long-term storage to archive data once a project is complete. This data will be stored in an offsite, offline archive. Data can be moved to the archive from either the Standard or the Scratch Storage locations. It can take up to five business days to transfer this data into or out of the Archive.
  • OneDrive/Teams: Microsoft 365 allows users to store and share data in OneDrive and Teams, the standard cloud storage solutions at Ohio State.
Transferring Data

The IT team can work with researchers to determine the best option for transferring their data. Options include:

  • Globus provides a fast, easy, secure, and reliable method for transferring data to various storage endpoints. You can view more Globus resources in the Administrative Resource Center (you will need to log in to view this page).
  • Native Protocols (NFS/SMB/S3)
  • Secure File Transfer Portal (SFTP) can be used to provide access to data endpoints that can only support SFTP
