Understanding Responsible Use

Responsible Use of University Devices

In the course of employment at Ohio State, employees may be issued university devices in the service of work-related tasks. Ohio State does not prohibit the use of university devices for personal use. However, be mindful that the device belongs to the university and will be updated and may be monitored when necessary or required.

The Responsible Use Policy at Ohio State University provides guidance for establishing responsibilities and limitations associated with the use of university computing resources. It emphasizes that cyberspace is not a separate legal jurisdiction, and existing laws, rules, and policies apply equally to the use of university computing resources.

  • Always follow the university's Responsible Use Policy and any additional guidelines provided by your department or unit, or federal, Ohio and other applicable law (such as FERPA, HIPAA, PCI, etc.).
  • Use only those computing resources you are authorized to use and only in the manner and extent authorized.
  • Respect the privacy of other users and their accounts, even if you have the ability to access them.
  • Be mindful that university devices may be monitored, and your activities could be subject to review.
  • Avoid using university resources for personal commercial purposes or personal financial gain.
  • Limit your use of computing resources to what you need so as not to interfere unreasonably with the activities of other users.
  • Refrain from stating or implying one is speaking on behalf of the university or using trademarks or logos without authorization to do so.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure a responsible and secure use of university computing resources. Click here to review the full policy
