Data Loss Prevention

One of the keys to keeping data safe is knowing what you have and knowing it is stored in a location that is appropriately secured.

The Data Loss Prevention (DLP) service provides a centrally supported offering that helps empower colleges and departments to improve their data visibility by discovering sensitive data such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. This service is available at no cost for use on university owned systems. To schedule an initial consultation, you can contact our team at dlpsecurity@osu.edu.

What types of scanning are supported by the DLP service?

Currently the DLP service supports data identification on these platforms:

  • Linux
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • SMB and NFS file shares
  • Databases such as MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle and others

Additional options that are also available include active scanning, image support (OCR), and automated finding remediation.

What Information Security Control Requirements does this service help with?

Data Loss Prevention can impact controls DAT 1.6.1 and 1.6.2 which focus on the identification of S4 data in your environment.
