Data Literacy

Data is an important resource. At Ohio State, we rely on data to make informed decisions that enhance student outcomes, improve operational efficiency and enable new research and innovations. Applying good data management and understanding is essential for data to be reliable, shared appropriately and used ethically.

Data literacy (also known as data fluency) refers to the ability to create, interpret, communicate and protect data effectively and appropriately in different contexts and situations. Understanding data literacy extends beyond data analysts, scientists and researchers; it's a vital skill for everyone who works with data, whether that be collecting, storing, sharing, reporting and/or analyzing it.

Why is data literacy and management important?

Data is everywhere in our digital world. It is used to inform decisions we make every day and has a significant impact on individuals, organizations like Ohio State and society. Therefore, it is essential to use data responsibly and to understand its limitations, assumptions and implications. Data literacy can help you to:

  • Make sense of data and use it to support your goals and objectives

  • Identify and avoid potential errors, biases or misinterpretations of data

  • Protect the privacy, security and integrity of data and comply with relevant laws and regulations

  • Recognize and respect the ethical and social dimensions of data and its use

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with others who use data in different ways and for different purposes

How can you improve your data literacy and management practices?

Everyone at Ohio State uses data in some shape or form, whether it’s checking your email, editing documents in OneDrive or SharePoint or analyzing research results. As a data user, here are some things you can do to enhance your data literacy and management skills:
