If you use a personal phone, tablet or computer to connect to Ohio State's eduroam Wi-Fi network and did not complete the re-onboarding process by Oct. 13, your device may no longer connect to eduroam automatically.
The good news is that it's not too late to update your device.
What should I do?
You will need to complete the re-onboarding process for each personal device you use on campus. The onboarding process ensures your device recognizes and trusts Ohio State's updated network security settings. If you didn’t re-onboard before Oct. 13, here’s what to do next.
- Connect to the Internet: If your device can no longer connect to eduroam, use cellular data or join the WiFi@OSU wireless network. This allows you to access the internet while updating your device.
- Re-onboard: Visit go.osu.edu/eduroam for instructions to connect your device to eduroam.Once re-onboarding is complete, your device should reconnect to eduroam normally.
What was this change necessary?
When devices connect to eduroam, they verify a digital security certificate that confirms the network is authentic and secure. These certificates are issued by trusted certificate authorities and have traditionally remained valid for several years. However, the certificate industry is significantly reducing certificate lifespans, meaning they may soon need to be renewed as often as every 40 days. Ohio State has updated the way devices establish that trust to reduce the need for frequent certificate-related updates in the future and help maintain a secure wireless experience.
While instructors, researchers and staff will all have to re-onboard any personal devices they use on campus, many university-managed devices have already been updated by local IT staff or through managed processes. Requirements for Ohio State-provided devices vary by department. If you use a university-managed device and are unsure whether action is required, contact your local IT support team.
You should plan to onboard your university-managed device(s) - unless you are in one of the groups listed in the accordion below.
Action not required for these groups
| College/Unit | Action |
|---|---|
| College of Arts and Sciences | No action required |
| College of Veterinary Medicine | No action required for university-managed Windows laptops; Mac laptop users must re-onboard their university-managed device |
| Managed IT Partners | No action required |
| Office of Advancement | No action required |
| Office of Student Life | No action required; If prompted, enter your OSU credentials. |
If your college or business unit is NOT on this list, you should re-onboard your university-managed devices.
* Note to IT Support Units: The Office of Technology and Digital Innovation uses device certificates and 802.1X to authenticate devices on both wired and wireless (eduroam) networks. To use this capability, an area must be a MITS partner or be actively progressing toward a managed network and SDES, including the required certificate authority (CA) capabilities. Please let us know if you have questions or would like to discuss the requirements and next steps.
