Ohio State has moved most students to a single “lastname.#@osu.edu” email account as part of an effort to simplify email use, reduce confusion and strengthen security across the university.
- Under this new approach, all university faculty, staff and students will use one primary lastname.#@osu.edu email account to send and receive university communications.
- Students who work for the university should still have a lastname.#s@osu.edu account to use for university business.
- BuckeyeMail is now a secondary email address for students, but logins will default to lastname.#@osu.edu, eliminating the need to use different emails to access different systems.
- Email sent to the lastname.#@buckeyemail.osu.edu and lastname.#@osu.edu email addresses will be received and delivered to the lastname.#@osu.edu mailbox.
By consolidating email into a single account, important university messages will arrive in one consistent place, making it easier for users to stay informed and engaged. Moving to a single email account provides several benefits for the university community:
- Reduces the need for users to monitor multiple accounts
- Eliminates the need to use different emails to log in to different systems
- Improves clarity around which email address to use for university communication
- Allows Ohio State to apply consistent security protections, including mobile device restrictions and data loss prevention controls
This change also supports the university’s broader efforts to modernize technology services while protecting sensitive information. Visit our project page for more details.
