Google Cloud Platform (GCP) offers university faculty and staff secure, scalable and cost-effective solutions tailored for university business. From research projects and web hosting to file storage and advanced analytics, GCP empowers innovation with cutting-edge tools.

All Google Cloud customers can use select Google Cloud products—like Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, and BigQuery—free of charge, within specified monthly usage limits. The Ohio State GCP service is for users who need functionality that goes beyond the free tier offerings. Consult with your local IT professionals and Security Coordinator to see if the workflow or application is appropriate before requesting an Ohio State GCP project.

Researchers

Researchers with NIST 800-171 requirements can explore information about which Google Cloud services operate in compliance with NIST standards. If you think you will be performing research that needs to be safeguarded with the NIST SP 800-171 controls, that research is likely export controlled, please reach out to the Export Control team at exportcontrol@osu.edu.

Who can use Ohio State Google Cloud Platform (GCP)?

Only Ohio State faculty and staff with university business needs. Faculty and staff can also provide access to students working with them on projects utilizing GCP. Consultation with local IT and Security Coordinators is required before requesting a license.

What kinds of projects are appropriate for GCP?

Projects involving research, web hosting, file storage, analytics, and university-related business. Not all workloads are appropriate—consult IT.

Can I start using Gmail and Google Docs?

Google Productivity Services is now available to use through the university.

GCP secure for storing institutional data?

Yes—for certain types of institutional data. It has been assessed for adequacy, but users should follow guidance and consult with IT Security.

Does Ohio State GCP support NIST 800-171 compliant research?

Some Google Cloud services meet NIST 800-171 standards. Contact the Export Control team if your research is subject to those controls.

How do I request a new GCP project?

Use the Ohio State GCP Readiness Checklist. You’ll need billing project worktags (no credit cards allowed).

Can I link an existing GCP project to Ohio State?

Yes—if it involves university data, business, or funding you may be able to get a better price and added security by linking to Ohio State’s contract. Contact the IT Service Desk and put in a general help ticket to link an existing project to the university contract.

Who manages access to Ohio State GCP projects?

OTDI (Office of Technology and Digital Innovation) manages root access to all projects.

How much does it cost to use GCP?

You pay only for what you use, no extra administrative fees are charged. Use the GCP Price Calculator to estimate costs. The Ohio State GCP pricing listed reflects the amount that will be charged back to your department. OTDI does not charge additional administrative fees for these services. 

Can I use a credit card to pay for GCP?

No, only approved university billing worktags are accepted.

How can I get help with GCP?

If you want to interact with other Ohio State users, university users can join the Ohio State GCP Community Team. Ohio State users can join the Team using code: yr10ohq.
