Onboarding Checklist for Tableau

A step-by-step guide to Tableau onboarding at Ohio State.

All Users

  1. Complete Institutional Data Policy (IDP) training, available in BuckeyeLearn
  2. Complete a Tableau Request form in ServiceNow.
    1. Request type: New Account/Access
    2. Project Name: Select the name aligned with your unit; if you do not see a group, select ‘Office of the Chief Information Officer’.
    3. Role: Select the appropriate role(s). If you are unsure, please consult your Project Leader

      Helpful Note:

      • Groups with ‘Analyst’ are a good starting point for all users.
      • Groups with ‘Developer’ are for those who will have a Tableau Desktop license.
      • If Office of the Chief Information Officer is the group selected, select TAB-RAE-All Users as the role.
  3. If you are using Enterprise data in Tableau, submit a request for Enterprise Data for Analytics Access. Enterprise data refers to institutional data and is used by groups such as Human Resources, Finance, Payroll, Grants, and Physical Space.

    Helpful Note:

Reporting access will suffice for most users; direct access is for users writing their own SQL.

  4. Complete Tableau Server Fundamentals, available by searching for “Tableau Server Fundamentals” in BuckeyeLearn

Analysts

In addition to the steps outlined above, those in an analyst role may need to take additional steps to onboard.

  1. Check with your manager and Project Leader on if a Tableau Desktop license or Web Authoring would be more appropriate for your role.
  2. If purchasing a Desktop license, follow the Desktop license steps.
  3. After purchasing and activating desktop license, complete Tableau Desktop Fundamentals, available by searching for “Tableau Desktop Fundamentals” in BuckeyeLearn
  4. Review Data Services 101 for a primer on data at Ohio State University.
