Learning Tool Data
Academic Year 2024
The Learning Systems Innovation (LSI) team routinely evaluates Ohio State’s current toolset, monitors its usage, and conducts satisfaction surveys. Data collected this way helps LSI know when it’s time to find a new tool that better suits the needs of students and instructors.
The following is a high-level overview of enterprise academic technology use and satisfaction at Ohio State during Academic Year 2024 (Summer 2023, Autumn 2023, Spring 2024). Data includes survey responses, service tickets, and usage data available from the tools or vendors.
CarmenCanvas
Instructors in this year’s survey rated Carmen much easier to use than instructors in 2019. In 2019, only 49% of instructors agreed or strongly agreed that Carmen is easy to use compared to 71.13% in 2024. Likewise, both students and instructors rated the tool as useful, with 73.86% of instructors and 91.42% of students who agreed or strongly agreed that Carmen does what they need it to do.
Overall, both instructors and students are satisfied with Carmen. Notably, when asked how much they agreed or disagreed with the statement “CarmenCanvas is easy to use,” 93.5% of our student sample either agreed or strongly agreed.
CarmenZoom
In academic year 2024, Ohio State users hosted 624,168 Zoom meetings for a total of 2.6 million meeting hours.
Service tickets declined slightly from academic year 2023 to academic year 2024 – dropping from 1,093 to 1,035. Both years, roughly one third of service tickets were related to users experiencing issues while two thirds were requests for more information about using the tool.
Mediasite
Mediasite usage at the university peaked in Autumn 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the number of unique logged-in users remains much higher than pre-pandemic levels, with 34,160 unique users in Autumn 2023. In the 2024 academic year, 460,186 hours of content were viewed with Mediasite — more than 52 years!
Instructors rated the usability of Mediasite as “good,” and their promoter score was positive. Students also rated the usability as “good,” though they are less likely to recommend the tool. The Learning Systems team is currently conducting a service improvement plan for Mediasite based on feedback from surveys, individual interviews and FY23 service tickets.
Turnitin
In academic year 2024, more than half a million assignments were analyzed (505,955). More than 3,300 classes (with upwards of 144,500 students enrolled) included at least one assignment with Turnitin enabled.
Turnitin is highly usable, earning “excellent” ratings from both instructors and students. A majority of survey respondents also rated it useful, with 59.60% of instructors and 61.18% of students responding agree or strongly agree to “Turnitin does what I need it to do.” Service ticket data shows few instructors and students run into problems when using the system.
PebblePad
PebblePad is used most often in autumn and spring, when the majority of GE bookend courses are taught. There were 61,638 logins in autumn 2023 and 61,400 in spring 2024, while summer 2023 saw 1,749. Activity for assets, anything uploaded or created, follows the same pattern. In summer 2023, there were 245 published assets, which increased to 15,851 in autumn 2023 and 16,672 in spring 2024, for a total of 32,768 published assets for academic year 2024.
Top Hat
In academic year 2024, 35,092 students were active in Top Hat, which is 53.65% of Ohio State’s enrolled students. A total of 567 active instructors used Top Hat with 1,126 classes.
Instructors asked students 12,906 questions in Top Hat in academic year 2024. The most common type of question presented was multiple choice (88%), followed by word answer (7.36%).
U.OSU
When U.OSU was launched, sites were automatically created for Ohio State students, faculty and staff when they first logged into U.OSU. Learning Systems discontinued automatic site creation on February 1, 2023 to reduce the number of unused sites.
A total of 3,566 sites were created or updated through U.OSU during the 2024 academic year. Those sites have 10,046 posts and 23,087 pages.
