Know Your Disaster Designation Status in Advance of a Weather Emergency

We're at the time of year when inclement weather can occur at a moment's notice. It's a good time to verify one’s disaster designation status as well the channels used to notify students, faculty, and staff when business operations at the university are interrupted.

Verifying your Disaster Designation status:

To verify your disaster designation status, log in to Workday, use the cloud icon to View Profile, and select the “Job,” then “Organizations” links. See screen shot at the end of the post for reference.

Staff designated as essential personnel should contact their supervisors to see if they are to report to work when a campus emergency arises.

The three disaster designation statuses include:

  • Essential employee - One who has been designated as critical to the operation of the unit, whose presence is required regardless of the existence of an emergency condition, university and/or building(s) closure, or canceling of classes and whose absence from duty could endanger the safety and well-being of the campus population and/or facilities.
  • Alternate employee - One who has been designated to serve as a back-up to an essential employee.
  • Standby employee - Any employee not designated as essential or alternate.

Staying informed about weather emergencies:

Ohio State Emergency Management recommends reviewing the emergency.osu.edu site and following the @OSU_EMFP Twitter channel, to stay apprised of weather emergencies affecting campus, including regional locations. Additionally, you may tune into WOSU 89.7 FM and check osu.edu.

For more details, review the Weather or Short-Term Closings page of the Office of Human Resources site, including Policy 615.
