Learn about University Expectations for Keeping Data Safe

In the course of your work for The Ohio State University, you may need to access institutional data that must be kept secure and confidential. To help you understand your responsibilities when handling institutional data, we encourage you to educate yourself by taking training that outlines the university's Institutional Data Policy. This training is recommended for all university employees and it is required annually for anyone with access to restricted data.

Institutional data may include information about university business and research in paper, electronic, audio and visual formats. As an institutional data user, you must be aware of your responsibilities for preserving the security and confidentiality of this information as outlined in the Institutional Data Policy (IDP).

We’re excited to announce that the new Institutional Data Policy (IDP) course for Program Year 4 (PY4). It’s available for self-enrollment in BuckeyeLearn by searching for “Institutional Data Policy [PY4]" or by visiting http://go.osu.edu/idp-enroll. If you previously registered for, but have not yet completed our previous Institutional Data Policy course, you may access and complete it through September 30, which will satisfy any compliance requirement you may currently owe.

You can register for Protecting Institutional Data through BuckeyeLearn. After you complete the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain your responsibilities for accessing and handling institutional data
  • Identify the four classifications of institutional data
  • Describe how you are permitted to share and store each classification of institutional data
  • Explain what you should do if you suspect the loss, unauthorized access or exposure of institutional data

If you have any questions about IDP training, please contact the Enterprise Security Awareness via email to SecurityAwareness@osu.edu
