Select and apply filters to view only the data you need in a Tableau dashboard or report. Save filter selections so you can easy return to frequently used views.
Apply filters
To quickly apply a saved combination of filters, or a view, click
,the View:<View Name> button, in the report header and select an option from the My Views list in the Custom Views dialog box.
Click the funnel icon
to open the filters and details pane.
- Select and apply filters.
- The original, default filter will generally be either (None) or (All) for available criteria.
Hover over a filter and click
, the Show all values icon, to quickly change a filter from None to All.
- Open the drop down box for criteria to select filters. Click again to close the drop down box.
- When you open a filter drop down box, your cursor will default into a search box. Begin typing to quickly find a specific filter value.
- In some cases, a key filter at the top of the list will need to be set before you are able to filter using other criteria. For example, a VP Dean (CCH6) value may be required before you can filter by Cost Center.
- Click Apply for each filter as you select values. Tableau applies filters dynamically as you select them. To exit or start over, click Cancel.
- When you have selected and applied filters that match rows in the data source, results will be displayed. Continue to select and apply filters until you have the view of data you need.
Click
to close the filters and details pane.
- Narrow or expand your results by reopening the filters and details pane, updating filters, and applying the changes.
Save views
Use the steps below to save your filter settings for views you will use frequently.
Click
,the View:<View Name> button,from the right side of the report header.
- When you first open a report, the view name will be Original.
- Type a Name for the view in the Custom Views dialog box.
- Select Make it my default to have this view of the report displayed every time you open the report.
- Click Save to save the view and close the Custom Views dialog box.
- Note that the View:<View Name> button now displays the name you typed for this view.
To rename or delete saved views or update your default view, open the Custom Views dialog box and select Manage Views.
