Tableau Server Stale Content Policy

Stale content is defined as content that has not been accessed for 90 days. This negatively impacts users by making it more difficult to find accurate information, while also consuming unnecessary server space and increasing maintenance efforts for analysts and support teams.

A Spring 2026 Tableau Server Health Check revealed that stale content accounts for 47% of all content on Tableau Server.

What is Stale Content?

Effective Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the university’s stale content process will change. The process is:

  • Content that has not been accessed or used for 90 days will be identified as stale content.
  • Stale content will be moved to a “Stale Content Archive” folder.
  • A backup copy of the content will be created prior to removal from Tableau Server.
  • Archived content will then be removed from the active Tableau Server environment.

Helpful Note:

Ohio State’s definition of stale content is twice the length of time as Tableau’s definition of ‘stale’.

If you would like archived content restored, please email data-visualization@osu.edu with:

  • The name of the content
  • The reason for restoration
  • The project URL where the content should be restored

Helpful Note:

The Tableau Team will review the petition and respond within 2 weeks.

A list of stale content was shared with all Tableau Creators in early June 2026.
