Tableau Dashboard Rollout Ideas

To provide proven recommendations for projects involving Tableau dashboards.

Analysis of the university’s Tableau Server shows that when a coordinated rollout occurs, there is an immediate uptick in users. To assist in planning dashboard rollout, below are recommendations that have worked at Ohio State.

Dashboard Rollout Ideas

  • Work with your department’s Marketing & Communications team to draft an initial message. Parts of a successful message include:
    • How to request access to the dashboard or to Tableau Server.
    • An audience (ex., is it all users in a unit, prior users of a tool that is being retired, are there communities of practice you may engage)
    • If trainings are upcoming and scheduled, include in the message.

      Helpful Note:

If your data contains comparisons between groups at the university, include this in your initial message. Humans are curious – often wanting to see where they compare vs. others. If this is in your dataset, highlight it.

  • Create a Microsoft Teams channel with easy to access documentation and information.
  • Schedule and host office hours – especially in the week after a dashboard launch.
  • Provide road shows. Perhaps users are more comfortable in smaller groups or have questions tailored to their team. Road shows allow tailored messaging to units. Likewise, if adoption relies on power users, provide a roadshow or training to the power users in a unit.
  • Offer training – whether it is live or an on-demand training in BuckeyeLearn.
    • Live trainings may be recorded and could be posted to BuckeyeLearn.
