Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic that can help you write, analyze information, brainstorm ideas, conduct research, summarize documents, solve problems, and complete other complex tasks.
Later this fall, instructors and staff will be able to purchase Claude™ Enterprise licenses to help leverage advanced generative AI capabilities for a wide range of tasks. Like our other AI offerings, purchasing a license under the university's contract ensures that prompts and inputs will not be used for training future AI models. Student licenses may be purchased with faculty or staff sponsorship.
Ohio State is pursuing Anthropic’s Enterprise platform, providing a secure, university-managed AI environment with enhanced capabilities beyond standard team-based offerings. This includes access to Claude Cowork and Claude Code, as well as access to advanced tools such as Claude Science and Fable, expanding opportunities for teaching, learning, research and administrative work.
Subscription pricing will align with Anthropic’s published tiers while enabling departments and units to purchase licenses through established university procurement processes, eliminating the need for individual credit card purchases. The service will be centrally managed to provide a consistent user experience, streamlined administration, single sign-on (SSO) integration and university-approved security controls, reducing the need for departments to maintain separate Anthropic environments.
Two Claude license options will be available through the on-demand software catalog using Buckeye Buy:
- Standard License at $216/year and is roughly equivalent to Claude’s consumer Pro edition, designed for regular AI users .
- Premium License at $600/year is roughly equivalent to Claude’s Max edition, designed for users with heavier or more frequent AI needs.
These offerings provide a cost-effective option for heavy AI users compared with paying for individual API or token usage. They also provide Ohio State with additional governance and security controls while helping bring existing AI use cases into supported university services.
Approved for Some Forms of Institutional Data
The platform meets Ohio State’s foundational S4 security requirements, allowing the use of data that includes FERPA-regulated information, personally identifiable information (PII) and restricted health information (RHI). Data classified as ITAR, CUI, HIPAA-protected information and PCI cardholder data will remain prohibited in this environment.
Claude is NOT approved for PHI and data protected under HIPAA.
While Ohio State is pursuing a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with Anthropic, there are no immediate plans to offer a PHI-compliant Claude environment. Anthropic's current PHI-compliant option provides a more limited user experience. Researchers requiring PHI support should continue using approved solutions available through the university's cloud service providers.
Training Resources
Explore Anthropic's training and certification offerings, from free self-paced learning for all users to advanced, partner-exclusive programs for organizations implementing Claude.
- Anthropic Academy is an official, free online learning platform launched by Anthropic to provide structured, self-paced courses and certifications on using Claude and building AI applications. Similar to Ohio State's Google Career Certificates model, colleges and programs will be able to incorporate and deliver Anthropic Academy content directly within academic courses and learning experiences.
- Anthropic Partner Academy is Anthropic's official training and certification platform for members of the Claude Partner Network. Designed specifically for consultants, developers, solution architects, and partner organizations, it provides structured learning paths, product training, hands-on technical resources, certifications, and partner-exclusive content focused on deploying and supporting Claude for customers. Unlike Anthropic Academy's public courses, Partner Academy is available only to validated partners and requires partner verification and additional login validation. This platform includes specialized training, certifications, and resources that help organizations build, advise on, and deliver Claude-powered solutions in enterprise environments.
Note for Researchers: DoD Ban
In February 2026, the federal administration directed federal agencies to immediately cease all use of Anthropic’s technology. In response, the Department of Defense (DoD) issued a specific ban designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk to national security and prohibiting contractors from using Anthropic's artificial intelligence technology. While the ban has faced legal challenges, researchers working on Department of Defense-funded projects should consider the implications of using Anthropic products (including Claude and Anthropic APIs) on DoD projects. Use Approved AI tools
New AI tools are released daily, and university technology teams evaluate these tools to ensure they are accessible, secure and effective. For an overview of all available AI tools, see Ohio State’s Approved AI Tools. Ohio State AI services may only be accessed through university-approved AI environments, including Ohio State Google, Ohio State AWS, Ohio State and Medical Center Microsoft 365, and Ohio State Claude.
Approved AI tools are provisioned by the university and should be accessed using your university credentials. Faculty and staff should ensure they are logged in with their university credentials to protect institutional data. Accessing or storing university data in personal or unapproved AI environments is not permitted, even if you signed up using your university email address.
University community members should not enter any institutional data that is categorized above the S1 (public) level into unvetted AI tools. Learn more about institutional data classifications as they relate to AI in the “Security and Privacy Statement on Artificial Intelligence.”
