Purpose of Course
HIPAA and Institutional Data Compliance training is the university’s mechanisms for complying with HIPAA laws and corresponding regulations, including research activities that use protected health information (PHI). This course also includes training on the Institutional Data Policy, which is yearly required training for those with access to restricted (S4) data.
Assignments
Wexner Medical Center Employees
Wexner Medical Center employees are assigned one of two available trainings for HIPAA.
- New employees: Upon hire, new employees who started employment after July 1 are dynamically assigned HIPAA and Institutional Data Compliance. They have 60 days to complete the training once the training is assigned to their transcript.
- Annual: HIPAA and Institutional Data Compliance Annual is dynamically assigned to individuals who have 1) previously completed HIPAA and Institutional Data Compliance upon hire and 2) have a Medical Center Start Date prior to July 1.
University Employees
University employees who do not fall under the Medical Center umbrella and who have access to Protected Health Information (PHI) and have access to restricted (S4) data must take HIPAA and Institutional Data Compliance on an annual basis. The training assignment is unit based.
Equivalencies and Prerequisites
The HIPAA and Institutional Data Compliance course and the HIPAA Institutional Data Compliance ANNUAL course are both equivalent to the Institutional Data Policy course. If a learner takes either of these courses, they are marked Completed (equivalent) for the Institutional Data Policy course.
