Tuition Guarantee Groups

Information from the Office of the University Registrar  regarding undergraduate student tuition guarantee groups.

Intended Audience: Staff who work with undergraduate students and Statements of Account
Last Updated: 3.3.23

First-year undergraduate students who are granted the Tuition Guarantee will have their Tuition Guarantee group information printed on their Statement of Account when the statement includes instructional fees. If a statement for example, is only finance charges, the Tuition Guarantee information will not be printed on it.

The Tuition Guarantee does not apply to students who first enrolled in college prior to Summer 2017. The Statement of Account will read for example: Columbus pre-guarantee tuition rate.

The Tuition Guarantee applies to instructional, general, student activity, student union, recreational and COTA fees for each entering class of undergraduate first-year students. The Tuition Guarantee does not apply to the non-resident surcharge, international surcharge, program/technology/course fees, or dining and housing charges for non-resident students and international students. After completion of four academic years, students will be charged the next incremental, guaranteed rate on a annual basis.

The Tuition Guarantee program does not apply to Graduate or Professional students.

Tuition Guarantee Group Examples

  • TG18 : Undergraduate Students that began Summer 2017, Autumn 2017, or Spring 2018
  • TG23 Undergraduate Students that began Summer 2022, Autumn 2022, or Spring 2023

Non-Resident Students

  • First-year undergraduate non-resident students will be placed in a Tuition Guarantee group.
  • The Tuition Guarantee program will apply to the instructional, general, student activity, student union, recreational, and COTA fees.
  • The Tuition Guarantee program will not apply to the non-resident surcharge, to program/technology/course fees, or to dining and housing charges.
  • Non-resident students who are reclassified as Ohio residents will then have instructional and mandatory fees covered by the Tuition Guarantee. The non-resident surcharge will no longer apply.

International Students

  • First-year undergraduate international students will be placed in a Tuition Guarantee group.
  • The Tuition Guarantee program will apply to the instructional, general, student activity, student union, recreational, and COTA fees.
  • The Tuition Guarantee program will not apply to the non-resident or international surcharges, to program/technology/course fees, or to dining and housing charges.

Transfer Students

  • Students who began at another college before autumn 2017 will not be a part of the Ohio State Tuition Guarantee program. In those cases, the pre-guarantee rates in place for continuing students will be in effect.
  • Students who became new first-year college students in autumn 2017 or later will join the Tuition Guarantee group in effect for students who started at Ohio State at the same time.
  • Example: A student who became a new first-year student in autumn 2017 at Columbus State Community College and transferred to Ohio State in autumn 2018 would be considered in their second year of the guarantee that began in autumn 2017.

    Helpful Note

The first-year admit date for transfer students is determined by submitted transcripts at the time of admission to Ohio State. If a student sends an additional transcript later showing an earlier first-year admit date, the student's tuition guarantee rate will not be recalculated. It is the student's responsibility to get all transcripts submitted on time.

Non-Degree Seeking Students

  • Non-Degree seeking students are not included in the Tuition Guarantee program.
  • If non-degree seeking students apply to become degree-seeking, and they are a new first-year student, the Tuition Guarantee group will be based on their admit term for that degree.

    Helpful Note

For these students, there should be another application on file to become degree-seeking.

  • If the student is a transfer student, the Tuition Guarantee (TG) group will be based on the student's first college admit term, post high school graduation. Like other transfer students, this will be determined by transcripts sent at the time of application.

Summer Start Students

  • First-year undergraduate students who start in the summer term will temporarily be given that term's TG group. They will be moved to the Autumn term's TG group for the Autumn term and forward.
  • Example: Student begins Summer 2019 and is placed in TG19. At the start of Autumn term, they will be moved to TG 20.
  • Reason: At the start of summer term, tuition rates for the new academic year have not yet been set.

College Credit Plus Students

  • College Credit Plus students will be considered new degree-seeking undergrad first-year students after receiving a high school diploma and enrolling in the university. This applies both to students who took CCP courses at Ohio State and to those who took them elsewhere.
  • Federal and state policies consider students to be new first-year students when they first enroll in a college or university after receiving a high school diploma.
  • The TG group assigned to a CCP student is based on the start term at the university after the student has received a high school diploma. It is not based on the CCP courses started, either at Ohio State or another institution.

Campus Change Students

  • Students who transition to Columbus from an Ohio State regional campus will pay the Columbus campus guaranteed rate that corresponds to their four-year cohort.
  • Example: Students who change in their second year would pay the same rate paid of second-year students at the Columbus campus.

Additional Information

  • The Tuition Guarantee value displayed on a Statement of Account is derived from a student's posted Instructional Fee for a particular term. If a student's accounts for a particular term does not include a posted Instructional Fee for a particular term. If a student's account for a particular term does not include a posted Instructional fee, no Tuition Guarantee value will be derived (displayed), even if the student is otherwise eligible. Example: TG19 undergraduate student whose Spring 2022 account for a subsequent term only includes miscellaneous activity (i.e., finance charges, credits and/or refunds) - no Tuition Guarantee value will display on the Spring 2022 statement of account.
  • The OCC_TG_MSG_CAT_FEE_CODE query has been created to assist staff in reviewing tuition guarantee-related data for an individual student's account.
