Credit Hour Explanation

The table provided will aid the Council on Academic Affairs reviewers as they check for credit hour changes.

Helpful Note

These values are separate and do not necessarily sum together.

Total minimum credit hours required for completion of program:

  1. In the case of a minor, this would include the number of hours beyond any prerequisite courses.

  2. In the case of an untagged BS or BA major, this would include the number of hours beyond any prerequisite courses.  Include hours for all courses required, whether or not from your unit.

  3. In the case of a tagged bachelor’s, this would include all courses that form the integrated program (e.g, 120 semester credit hour BFA in ceramics).  Include all prerequisites, GE, and major courses.

  4. In the case of a graduate program, include all hours of regular coursework and research, but do not include any potential undergraduate courses that might be considered prerequisite.

Required credit hours offered by the unit:

  1. Of the hours that you already listed under “Total minimum credit hours required for completion of program,” how many are offered by your unit?

Required credit hours offered outside of the unit:

  1. Of the hours that you already listed under “Total minimum credit hours required for completion of program,” how many are offered by other units?

Required prerequisite credit hours not included above:

  1. In the case of a minor, this would include any prerequisite courses that must be completed to enter into the coursework of the minor proper.

  2. In the case of an untagged BS or BA, this would include any prerequisite courses that must be completed to enter into the coursework of the major proper.

  3. In the case of a tagged bachelor’s, the prerequisites have already been included in the “Total minimum credit hours required for completion of program,” and thus this should be zero.

  4. In the case of a graduate program, all prerequisites are assumed to have been taken before admission to the graduate program, and thus this should be zero.
